[origin: WO9908532A1] Dominant probiotic bacterial strains have been isolated. The isolated bacterial strains fed to a ruminant animal are able to prevent the establishment of the pathogen E. coli O157:h7 in the animal. The strains can be re-isolated from the gastrointestinal tract contents of inoculated animals at about 28 days post-inoculation. Animals previously infected by E. coli O157:h7 can be treated to reduce or eliminate the pathogen by administering any of the dominant probiotic bacteria of the invention.
