[origin: WO9831407A1] This invention is a needle apparatus (10) for intravenous applications which helps prevent needlesticks. The invention includes a needle housing (22) to which a standard hypodermic needle (27) is attached. The needle housing (22) can then be attached to standard syringes via a base (21). A protective housing (23) surrounds the needle housing (22) which provides two locking positions with the protective housing (23) extended over the needle (27). The first is "temporary" which can be removed to restore the needle (27) but still encases the needle (27) protecting medical personnel from a needlestick. The second is "locked" where the needle (27) cannot be re-exposed, again protecting medical personnel. The protective housing (23) is fitted with a Luer lock (26) so that the apparatus (10) can be used to connect to an I.V. line without requiring the removal of the needle (27).
