Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19736462A1] Prior to forming the preform is heated to the required temperature by exposing it to controlled radiation. The maximum intensity of the radiation is in a wavelength for which the material has low absorbtivity, i.e. higher transmissibility than for longer wavelengths. An Independent claim is also included for blow moulding, deep drawing, or other thermal forming installations which have a radiant pre-heater. The emitted radiation spectrum is controlled to give a maximum in the low absorbtivity region of the material. Preferred Features: The maximum radiation intensity is in the near infrared at a wavelength of 0.8-1.0 mu m where the thermoplastic has an absorption band not exceeding 50%. The output of a halogen lamp is controlled by regulating the winding temperature and by using filters or choppers, and is distributed by mirrors or grids.
