[origin: EP1006490A2] The system has a center with at least one rental vehicle (1-3) and a rental terminal (4) that dispenses an access instrument (F2) for a rental vehicle to a vehicle hirer on request and authorization, so that accounting for the rental costs is performed using the rental duration and/or other usage data. One or more defined rental terminals are associated with the rental vehicles and each terminal has a separate storage unit (S1-S8) for each access instrument.
