Abstract (en)
[origin: CA2280729A1] This invention is a coil apparatus (170) and method for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic agents intravascularly in which a coil is placed in an artery or other vessel at a diseased location, and the diagnostic or therapeutic agents are delivered by the coil to that specific location. The coil apparatus (170) includes a resilient fiber core (171) enclosed in a soft, hollow polymer tubing (172). The resilient fiber core has a pre-shaped coil at one end that overcomes the susceptibility of the polymer tubing to become uncoiled, while permitting a construction of the coil having a very small diameter. The polymer tubing is a radiopaque, and has a soft surface for engaging the inside of a vessel. The coil is deployed by a deployment device at a specific site in a vessel to be treated. Once at the delivery site, the deployment device ejects the coil out of a delivery sheath into the vessel. The polymer tubing covering the coil can be perforated or porous so that fluid based agents passing through one or more lumens of the tubing are ejected out of the coil to the site to be treated. Alternatively, a soluble coating (173) containing the diagnostic or therapeutic agents can be applied to the outer surface of the polymer tubing, rather than passing fluid based agents through a lumen of the tubing. Variations in the shape of the coil and in the deployment devices are disclosed.
