[origin: EP1008746A2] The fuel injection system includes a protective circuit governed by fuel filter pressure differences and makes use of a valve (12) which returns fuel to the tank (2) as a function of the filter pressure difference. The valve housing (13) contains a piston (14) which reciprocates under spring load so as to free either a shutoff bore (16) in the housing (13) through which fuel reaches the highpressure pump or again frees a control bore (17) in the housing used to return fuel to the tank (2) off the feed pump (1). A bypass (10) round the valve (12) contains an expansion element (28) which and/or the valve (12) are integrated in the fuel filter cover (8).
