[origin: WO9817475A1] This invention is a printer in which loading of print media (52) is greatly facilitated, and in which modular construction is used in order to substantially reduce the number of parts normally needed of this type of printer. The printer includes a base (10) and an associated cover (12) that encloses an interior region of the printer. The cover (12) is movable between opened and closed positions, and mounts a spring biased platen roller (40), which is engaged with a printhead (50) fixed in the base when the cover (12) is closed. A cutter mechanism (15), including a fixed blade (15a) mounted to the cover (12) and a reciprocating blade (15b) mounted in the base (10) also separates whenever the cover (12) is opened in order to further facilitate print media loading. The printhead (50) is secured to a printhead mounting and control module (54) which also includes components and circuitry needed to drive the printhead (50).
