[origin: DE19717001C1] The invention relates to a method for measuring the diameter of a gut (2), in particular natural gut, to be used in sausage production. One section (19) of the gut (2) is filled with water or compressed air, and is placed between the bearing surface (6) and the measuring finger (7) of a device (1). In this way, the diameter of the gut is measured. The invention is characterized in that the entire length of the gut (2) is moved past the bearing surface (6) and the measuring finger (7). The latter are arranged on a test bench (3) on a carriage (4) in such a way that they can freely move transversely to the movement of the gut (2), whose transverse movements they follow. The water or compressed air in the section (19) is maintained near the measuring finger (7) by a definite narrowing of the cross-section of the gut (2) on both sides. The diameter of the gut (2) is measured continuously, regardless of its changes in position. As a result of this method, the measuring process is simplified and considerably accelerated.
