[origin: WO9910499A1] A one-step biosynthesis process of pravastatin is disclosed. Fungal host cells that can produce compactin are transformed with a polynucleotide that encodes a foreign hydroxylase enzyme which is capable of converting the compactin into pravastatin. This can be cheaper and more efficient than previous two-stage fermentation processes (firstly a fungus to produce compactin, and then bacteria to hydroxylate the compactin to pravastatin).
