[origin: WO9914446A1] A process for converting manhole covers, gully gratings (2) or the like into liquid-permeable filter elements has the following steps: preparation of the gully grating (2) to be converted or perforation of the manhole cover to be converted; and covering the top side of the gully grating (2) or manhole cover with a prefiltering layer (8) made of a metal grid, perforated metal or plastic sheet, the free cross-section of the prefiltering layer (8) being smaller than that of the gully grating (2).
