[origin: DE19741658A1] The electrodes of a gas-filled discharge gap are provided with a nickel layer and with an activating material which contains metallic nickel. In a gas-filled discharge gap, in which the electrode surfaces have an activating material of sodium and/or potassium silicate containing a barium compound, metallic titanium and an oxide compound of cesium and a transition metal, the electrodes (1, 2) are provided, on their surfaces both within and beyond the discharge space, with a \-5 mu m thick nickel layer (11) and the activating material (4) contains metallic nickel in addition to titanium.
