[origin: DE19740761A1] An automatic transport system, e.g. an overhead rail system or a floor guided system, has a CPU (52) connected to one track and with the separate transport units (12,14) each moving independently and fitted with positions sensors and microprocessors. Each unit exchanges data with the CPU, and with other units, via a bus connection through the track. Contact with the track is by sliding contacts. The track has a magnetic strip with position markings read by the position sensors.
