[origin: WO9915697A1] The present invention relates to the use of phospholipase C- gamma 1 gene for the diagnosis, prognosis and development of treatments of bipolar disorder and/or lithium response. There is provided a method for the identification of patient with susceptibility to bipolar disorder and/or lithium response, which comprises the steps of: a) obtaining a nucleic acid sample of the patient; and b) determining allelic variants of phospholipase C- gamma 1 gene present in the sample, and wherein certain allelic variants are indicative of a risk of pipolar disorder and/or lithium response.
