[origin: FR2768820A1] The small permanent magnet is moved by an electromagnet but is also able to rest in stable positions by magnetic attraction to supporting frame. The opto-mechanical switch (1) for optical fibers (50,51,52) may be bistable or multi-stable and includes at least one optical fiber which is mobile with respect to a fixed optical fiber (50,52). These fibers are supported in grooves within blocks which fit together enclosing the switch assembly. A permanent magnet is threaded on to the mobile fiber and control is provided by an electromagnet coil (40) which surrounds the structure and is able to displace the permanent magnet and associated mobile fiber. The mobile magnet is able to contact metal surfaces so that it remains stable in one of its positions after being moved by the influence of the electromagnet.
