[origin: WO9917470A1] A mobile communication system and method for determining relationships between cells within an area including non-neighboring cells. The invention makes use of relatively strong coding of base station identifiers, substantially synchronized idle frames, and broadcast control channels which are transmitted on designated time slots for different co-channel cells within an area. The invention allows cell relation and synchronization information to be determined efficiently and reliably to allow for system performance improvements.
