Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2312148A] A seat belt retractor with a lockable spool 1 includes force limiting means to allow further pay-out of the belt after the spool 1 has locked. In one aspect spool 1 comprises a plurality of fins with radial sections and circumferential sections which overlap one another and belt tension acts to crush the radial sections and to slide the circumferential sections over each other. Shear elements may connect adjacent fins. In another aspect an energy absorbing member connects the spool to the spool shaft so as to allow relative rotation of the spool when a predetermined force is exceeded. The energy absorbing may be by friction between clutch plates, by extruding material between compartments of a hollow spool, or by compressing deformable bushes or deformable material inserts in discs mounted on the shaft. Alternatively a tension spring can be used to resist relative motion between the spool and the shaft.
