[origin: DE19748182A1] The invention relates to a device for actuating a "brake-by-wire" brake system of a motor vehicle, consisting of an actuating pedal arranged in a pivot bearing in such a way that it can pivot in a limited manner. Said pedal is prestressed in the opposite direction of actuation by means of a spring-loaded device. The invention also comprises a travel simulator that is connected to the actuating pedal for power transmission. Said travel simulator cooperates with a damping device to define the setting of a predetermined force-travel characteristic curve. In order to enable the force-travel characteristic curve of the actuating pedal (1) to flexibly adapt to the predetermined course, the invention provides that the damping device is designed as a magneto-rheological damper (10).
