[origin: FR2770315A1] The reader is able to operate in a standby mode, until the insertion of the card is detected. The system for contact-less communication between a terminal (100) and a card (200) uses electromagnetic fields for transmitting and receiving information. The card comprises a chip (210) with processing circuits and a writable store controlled by the terminal. The terminal comprises a system for temporarily inhibiting the transmitted electromagnetic field, or reducing its power. An optical system is provided for detecting the presence of the card in the terminal, by the card or the hand of the user interrupting an optical beam. Once the card is detected in this way, the electromagnetic power is increased, enabling communication between terminal and card. The detector may alternatively operate on the basis of weight, or may operate in response to detection of the opening of a door leading to the terminal.
