[origin: DE19850366A1] A novel sintered article comprises a stabilized tetragonal zirconium oxide-containing matrix material, a major amount of an aluminum oxide/chromium oxide solid solution and a minor amount of an alkali metal-, alkaline earth metal-, Cd-, Pb-, Hg-, and/or rare earth-substituted aluminum oxide/chromium oxide solid solution or aluminum oxide solid solution. A novel sintered article comprises 60-98 vol.% matrix material containing 2-40 vol.% stabilized tetragonal zirconium oxide; 67.1-99.2 vol.% aluminum oxide/chromium oxide solid solution; and 0.8-32.9 vol.% another solid solution chosen from La0.9Al11.76-xCrxO19, Me1Al11-xCrxO17, Me2Al12-xCrxO19, MeAl12-xCrxO19 and/or Me3Al11-xCrxO18, where Me1 = alkali metal, Me2 = alkaline earth metal, Me = Cd, Pb or Hg, Me3 = rare earth metal and x = 0.0007 to 0.045. Independent claims are also included for (i) processes for producing the above sintered article; and (ii) a sintered article with a stabilized tetragonal zirconium oxide-containing matrix material which contains platelets of Me1Al11O17, Me2Al12O19, MeAl12O19 and/or Me3Al12O18, where Me1 = alkali metal, Me2 = alkaline earth metal, Me = Cd, Pb or Hg, Me3 = rare earth metal.
