[origin: WO9924907A1] A portable data download device that downloads digital data from a digital appliance, such as digital image data from a digital camera, into a data storage medium, without the use of a personal computer. In other words, a data download device connects to and queries a digital appliance, such as a digital camera, and then downloads and stores digital data from the appliance. The data download device automatically queries the digital appliance to determine the device type and data transfer protocol and driver. The data download device can be coupled with a data storage device, such as a disk drive, or can be a separate, stand-alone device.
