[origin: EP1032007A2] An encoding switch (1) has its points of contact (3,4,5) arranged in a circle on a flat substrate (2), and the switching member (7), mounted for rotation and interaction with the fixed contacts (3,4,5), is constantly engaged with an incoming point of contact (11) on the substrate (2). The fixed contacts (3,4,5) are uniformly distributed around a circular path concentrically positioned relative to the axis of rotation of the switching member (7), which has three sliding contacts (8) arranged with half as much spacing or pitch as the fixed contacts (3,4,5). The fixed contacts' spacing around the circular track and the width of the sliding contacts (8) is calculated so that, depending on the position of the switching member, one sliding contact or two sliding contacts engages or engage with one or with two of the fixed contacts (3,4,5).
