[origin: DE19750813A1] The invention relates to an appliance for stirring or reducing foods, especially a hand blender. The appliance has a working shaft (1) which is driven by a driving motor and which extends in a housing part (4) of the housing of the appliance. A working part (3) is fixed to the driven end (2) of the working shaft (1). The housing part (4) becomes a protective shield (5) in the area of the driven end (2) of the working shaft (1), said shield (5) at least partially encompassing the working part in a radial direction and being open at its bottom end, ending in an opening edge (17). Means (15; 21, 22) for enabling the working part (3) and the opening edge (17) of the protective shield (5) to move axially in relation to each other are provided so that the tool (3) is adequately protected by the protective shield (5) in a base position whilst at the same time being suitable for reducing large solid pieces of food.
