An input station (E1, E2, E3) is designated by a page description language to a destination address. The device control (14) assigns a logical device address to this destination address which designates at least two input stations (E1, E2). When one input station is empty, output is automatically switched over to the other input station. The invention also relates to a printer for implementing the method.
