[origin: WO9927090A1] Methods are disclosed for assessing the toxic or pathologic effects of a selected environmental stimulus or reagent on a mammalian cell by determining on a DNA grid a "fingerprint" hybridization pattern. The fingerprint pattern is characteristic of chemically or structurally diverse stimuli or reagents, which have a common adverse effect on gene transcription. A test compound is screened for a similar toxic effect by comparing its hybridization pattern on a similar grid to the fingerprint.
