[origin: WO9928466A1] Disclosed are methods for the detection of tumor cells, in particular human breast cancer cells. Genetic and antibody probes and methods useful in determining the presence and monitoring of tumor cell proliferation are also described. The methods involve determining HET polypeptide expression or loss of heterozygosity at human chromosomal locus 19p13 as a measure of tumor cell malignancy. Also described are procedures for transforming cells with HET gene containing vectors that express HET polypeptide.
