Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9927146A1] An in situ process is provided for producing an aluminium alloy containing titanium carbide particles, the process comprising introducing into an aluminium-titanium melt, graphite in bulk form, preferably manufactured in the form of a rotor, under conditions which facilitate the reaction of titanium in the melt with graphite to produce a dispersion of fine titanium carbide particles within the melt, and finally solidifying the melt so as to retain the uniform distribution of the in situ formed titanium carbide particles in the product. Aluminium alloys containing titanium carbide particles produced according to the process of the present invention are good candidates for various wear-resistant, light-weight composite material applications. Another preferred use for alloys produced by the present invention is as master alloys for grain refining aluminium-based metals, particularly those which are known to exhibit the so-called "positioning effect".
