Abstract (en)
[origin: EP1035191A2] A novel catalyst is produced by concentrating non-organic elements found in used lubricating oil. Chemically refining used lubricating oil with a strong acid yields a concentrated residue which produces a porous solid when remaining hydrocarbons are thermally cracked whilst passing a hydrocarbon gas through the residue. In the porous solid, the non-organic elements from the used lubricating oil are embedded in a carbon-based matrix. The catalyst may be used to crack long-chain hydrocarbons at temperatures as low as about 320 DEG C in the presence of hydrogen or a hydrocarbon gas.
