[origin: WO9930151A1] This invention is a method for identifying and isolating at least one of the following: a polypeptide of interest and/or a gene thereof; a target compound and/or a gene thereof, wherein the polypeptide of interest, or the target compound, or both are unknown. The method is based on the steps of: (1) displaying a library of a polypeptide of interest on the surface of a population of prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells; (2) exposing the population to a target compound; and (3) exposing the population to a selection agent. Interaction among the three components "imprints" the polypeptide: that is, the interaction selects for those cells in which the polypeptide interacts with the target compound in a prescribed manner.
