[origin: EP1037232A2] High voltage switching equipment, comprises series-connected vacuum switch chambers (1, 2) of different sizes and/or contact piece designs. High voltage switching equipment comprises two or more series-connected vacuum switch chambers (1, 2) which have different physical sizes and/or contact piece designs, e.g. diameters, spacings or types, and are selected so that re-arcing and arc-backs of one chamber type are controlled by another chamber type. An Independent claim is also included for operation of the above switching equipment, by time-offset opening of the contact pieces of two or more vacuum switch chambers. Preferred Features: Quench chamber insulation may be achieved with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), nitrogen (N2), air or other gaseous or liquid insulating material.
