The device is connected to the data medium (10) via a data communications path (22-24) that is implemented with the use of an intermediate unit (20) with a test module (24) that automatically conducts communications with the portable data medium and checks the authenticity of the data medium. Vorgeschlagen wird eine über eine Datenübertragungsstrecke (22, 23, 24) mit einer Chipkarte (10) verbindbare Vorrichtung, welche eine Prüfung der Echtheit der Chipkarte erlaubt. Erfindungsgemäß ist die Datenübertragungsstrecke (22, 23, 24) in Form einer Zwischeneinheit (20) realisiert, die ein Prüfmodul (24) trägt, welches selbständig eine Kommunikation mit der Chipkarte (10) durchführt, um deren Echtheit festzustellen. Die Datenübertragungsstrecke (22, 23, 24) ist vorzugsweise selbst nach Art einer Chipkarte mit der Vorrichtung verbunden. <IMAGE>
