Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9931012A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a system for water-vapor reforming of a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative parent substance. The invention relates to a method for operating a system for water-vapor reforming of a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon derivative with a reforming reactor, whereby, according to the invention, the parent substance which is to be reformed undergoes a water-vapor reforming in the reforming reactor when the system is warming up. The invention provides that when the system is cold started, at least one part of the reforming reactor provided as a multifunction reactor unit is operated in a first operational phase as a catalytic burner unit during supply of fuel and a gas containing oxygen, and is operated in a subsequent second operational phase as a unit for partially oxidizing the parent substance. In addition, water is charged shortly before the start of the second operational phase and/or the fuel quantity stream is increased with an increasing temperature in the first operational phase and/or a hypostoichiometric oxygen quantity stream is adjusted in the first operational phase. The inventive method can be utilized, for example, in fuel cell operated motor vehicles in order to obtain the hydrogen which is required for the fuel cells from liquid carried methanol.
