[origin: WO9931404A1] A shock transmission unit has a cylinder, a piston (13, 2) within the cylinder, dilatant material (47) within the cylinder on either side of the head of the piston, and a valve (44, 13) operable to control the passage of the dilatant material (47) within the cylinder from one side of the piston head (13, 2) to the other. The valve (44, 13) may be responsive to temperature, in order to compensate for the change in viscosity of the dilatant material with temperature. The valve may be responsive to the pressure differential across the piston head, allowing passage of the dilatent material from one side of the head to the other in response to a pressure differential below a given threshold.
