[origin: WO9931518A1] A method for generating and guiding an electric pathway from one electrode (5) to another (6), comprises the steps of: 1) providing at least two electrodes between which it is desired to drive the electric current, said electodes being immersed in a medium; 2) providing a voltage between said electrodes, wherein said voltage is lower than the electrical breakdown voltage of said medium; 3) applying a laser pulse along at least a section of the path where it is desired to create the electric pathway, the energy of said laser pulse being sufficient to generate a plasma within said medium along said pathway; 4) continuing to apply a voltage or current, after the end of the laser pulse, of a magnitude sufficient to sustain the electric discharge; and 5) optionally injecting a gas at at least a location along the predetermined pathway between the electrodes.
