Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9933313A1] A cell handling unit (CHU) (32) receives incoming ATM cells from an ATM switch (30) and provides outgoing ATM cells back to the ATM switch. The cell handling unit (CHU) includes a cell router (220) which, in accordance with a type of an incoming ATM cell, routes at least a portion of a payload of the incoming ATM cell to one of plural cell handling units. The plural cell handling units include a demultiplexer function (260); a queuing resource (230) (which contains an optional multiplexer function); and a top priority function (266). The demultiplexer function obtains a packet from the payload of the incoming ATM cell having a first type AAL protocol and uses the packet to prepare an outgoing ATM cell having a second type AAL protocol. The queuing resource selectively receives from the cell router a package derived from the payload of the incoming ATM cell and queues the package in a queuing system. When the queued package is an ATM cell payload, the queued payload is utilized as the payload of the outgoing cell. When the package is a packet (e.g., having the second type AAL protocol), the mutliplexer function obtains a packet from the payload of the incoming ATM cell and uses the packet to prepare an outgoing ATM cell having the first type AAL protocol. The top priority function forms an outgoing ATM cell from the incoming ATM cell payload without the payload of the incoming cell being routed to the queuing resource.
