[origin: FR2772757A1] S-Aryl thiocarbamate compounds (I) and O-aryl thiocarbamate compounds (II), all containing at least one amino group and at least one electron-withdrawing group, are new. Also claimed is the preparation of aromatic thiols (III) containing at least one amino group from (I). (I) and (II) are preferably of formulae (I') and (II') respectively. A = residue of a ring forming all or part of a mono- or polycyclic aromatic or heteroaromatic ring system; R = H or hydrocarbyl; X1 = electron-withdrawing group; X2 = H or a substituent; Z = group containing a doublet donor atom bonded to the C bearing S in (II') or O in (I'); n = number of X2 substituents. Claimed preparation of (I) involves heating (II); and claimed preparation of (II) involves reacting aromatic hydroxy compounds bearing at least one amino or nitro group with Y-CS-Z (Y = leaving group) then reducing any nitro groups.
