[origin: DE19848950A1] The manipulated variable controlling change in length of the piezo stack is the electric charge (AQ) applied to the stack and generated by a charge generator (3). The generator is controlled by a control unit (2). The application and operating conditions of the IC engine, e.g. load and temperature and aging of the stack, are monitored by sensors (4). Their outputs are fed to the control unit to effect parameterization of the charge control system to adjust for these conditions
