[origin: WO0008518A1] A ferroelectric liquid crystal display comprising a ferroelectric liquid crystal element in which a ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates which have a plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of signal electrodes on their respective facing surfaces, and a light source which emits lights of a plurality of colors different from each other continually. The scanning period (TS) during which one of the colors of the light source is emitted is divided in two sections. The 1st section (SC1) has a selection period during which the display state is determined and a non-selection period during which the display state selected in the selection period is maintained, and the 2nd section (SC2) which is the rest of the scanning period has a selection period during which a black display state is selected and a non-selection period during which the black display state selected in the selection period is maintained.
