Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19801822C1] The invention relates to a method and device for continuous metal casting, especially for casting thin slabs of steel; in a stationary ingot mould with two wide side walls that are located opposite each other, are provided with a funnel-shaped opening in the pouring area and which converge in the direction in which the slab is removed, starting from the entrance to the ingot mould, at least with respect to part of the height of the ingot mould, in order to form a space that corresponds to the thickness of the slab to be cast. The ingot mould also comprises two narrow side strips which are jammed in between the wide sides, in addition to an immersion casting tube enabling the liquid metal to be introduced into the ingot mould. A sufficient amount of lubricant is applied to the free surface of the liquid metal in the ingot mould outside the immersion casting tube. The amount of lubricant used corresponds to the lubrication requirements of the slab at casting speeds of more than 4m/min. The surfaces of the narrow sides of the strand shell are deformed in such a way that their horizontal length is not modified by more than five times the value of the natural dimension to which the material is constrained by shrinkage forces.
