[origin: DE19801598A1] Preparation of N-alkylated aniline derivatives (I) comprises reaction of aromatic olefins (II) and aniline derivatives (III) and in an inert solvent using one or more basic catalysts selected from alkali or alkaline earth metal alcoholates or amides. Preparation of N-alkylated aniline derivatives of formula, Ar-N(R<1>)2-n(CHR<2>CHR<3>Ar')n (I) comprises reaction of an aromatic olefin derivative of formula, Ar'CR<3>=CHR<2> (II) and an aniline derivative of formula, Ar-N(R<1>)2-n(H)n (III) in an inert solvent using one or more basic catalysts, selected from alkali or alkaline earth metal alcoholates or amides. Ar, Ar' = independently 6-22C aromatic or 5-22C heteroaromatic groups (containing one or more N, O or S heteroatoms), which are optionally condensed; R<1>, R<2>, R<3> = independently H, 1-8C alkyl or Ar; n = 1 or 2.
