[origin: DE19852340A1] The invention relates to a friction-band brake comprising a rotating cylinder (1) having a friction band (2) wound around at least one part of its periphery. The inventive brake also comprises a support (3) for said friction band, which can rotate around a first axis in a first braking position and exhibits two halt points (10, 11) for respective opposed end parts of the friction band. A first halt point has, relatively to the first axis, a lever arm (a) which is longer than the second halt point. According to the invention, the support (3) can rotate in a second braking position around a second axis relative to which the second halt point exhibits a longer lever arm.
