[origin: FR2773726A1] The desired reaction is extremely exothermic and must take place in a cooled reactor (1) which contains a bundle of metallic trays (2) with wavy surfaces. Between them is formed three series of canals, one for the principal (reacting) fluid A and two for coolants B and C, each perpendicular to A and in the opposite direction to each other. The principal fluid A enters through a pipe (20) opening into free space (3) between sealed reactor (1) and bundle of trays (2) and communicates with inlets to first set of canals. The outlet for fluid A includes collector (21) placed inside reactor and covering outlets from the first set of canals and an outlet pipe (22) connected to the collector. Coolant B enters via a pipe (24) to collector (23) covering inlets to second set of canals and leaves via a collector (25) connecting the outlets to the second set of canals to an outlet pipe (26). Coolant C enters via a pipe (28) to a collector (27) covering inlets to the second set of canals and leaves via a collector (29) connecting the outlets to the second set of canals to an outlet pipe (30). The first set of canals has a central section filled with catalyst and connected to means (31, 32) of loading the catalyst and removing (33, 34) the used catalyst. The catalyst is held in the first series of canals by grilles allowing the circulation of fluid through the catalyst. The vessel has \- 1 bursting disc (37) operating at given pressure. The principal fluid is a mixture of air and ortho-oxylene to obtain phthallic anhydride. At least one of the cooling fluids is a mixture of base salts.
