[origin: WO0031740A1] The invention relates to a recording apparatus for recording a digital information signal in a first or a second recording mode on a record carrier (140). The transport velocity (V1) of the record carrier in the first recording mode is k times the transport velocity (V2) in the second recording mode, where k is a constant larger than 1. A trick play signal generating unit (116) generates a first (respectively second) trick play signal when the apparatus is in said first (respectively second) recording mode. The merged digital information signal and trick play signal is recorded on said recorded carrier so as to enable in a reproduction apparatus for reproducing said digital information signal (m) a first reproduction mode for reproducing said digital information signal, when recorded by the recording apparatus in said first recording mode, (n) a second reproduction mode for reproducing said digital information signal, when recorded by the recording apparatus in said second recording mode, (o) a third reproduction mode for reproducing said first trick play signal, when recorded by the recording apparatus in said first recording mode, (p) a fourth reproduction mode for reproducing said second trick play signal, when recorded by the recording apparatus in said second recording mode. The velocity of the record carrier which is substantially equal for both third and fourth reproduction modes.
