[origin: GB2326504A] A currency handling apparatus for dispensing currency units 6 from a plurality of stores 22-28, each for storing units of currency of a respective denomination, comprises a processor for predicting the future distribution of currency units to be dispensed and an output for outputting a signal representing instructions for changes to the stores in accordance with the predicted future distribution. The instructions may indicate the number of stores required for a given denomination selected in accordance with the predicted future distribution. The currency handling apparatus may include a recorder for recording details of an event when there is insufficient currency in the stores to supply the correct change for a given transaction. The currency handling apparatus is particularly useful for handling coins in a vending machine.
