[origin: WO9938994A1] The invention includes pancreatic eukaryotic translation initiation factor-2 alpha kinase (PEK) and DNA sequences which encode them. Northern blot analysis shows that the gene is expressed in a wide variety tissues, with highest expression in pancreas. Human and rat PEK were expressed in Sf-9 insect cells and were shown to phosphorylate eukaryotic translation initiation factor-2 alpha . Recombinant vectors and host cells containing PEK genes are disclosed, as are methods for recombinant production, anti-PEK antibodies and assay methods.
