[origin: WO0033100A1] A magnetic resonance imaging system includes a cylindrically shaped space for receiving a patient to be examined. In conventional MRI systems this space is both long and narrow; this impedes the access to the patient during images and also causes feelings of claustrophobia. The novel MRI system has a cylindrical space which is either short and wide or open at its side, thus providing access for a physician or medical assistant. The open space also reduces feelings of claustrophobia.
