The circuit has at least one ignition device and a capacitance (C2) switched directly or indirectly in parallel with the lam that forms a resonant circuit with an adapter impedance (L1) during operation. The circuit contains an arrangement suitable for charging up the capacitance to a voltage higher than the circuit input voltage to provide an acceptance voltage for the electrod significantly higher than the circuit input voltage in addition to the ignition pulse. Independent claims are also included for a high pressure discharge lamp and for a method of igniting a high pressure discha lamp.
