The actual operating state of a technical process is continuously determined on the basis of operational parameters and compared in an operational parameters-reference values comparison. The operational parameters detected on the basis of pure operational measuring values during stationary operating states flows into a continuously updated overall database. A reference database as subset of the overall database is automatically selected from said overall database after selection criteria has been entered. The reference values taken from the reference database are used as a comparison with actual operational parameters.
