Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2334409A] Cellular telephone apparatus 15 at a remote location that is being monitored for a predetermined activity or condition, has its condition altered in response to sensing of the predetermined condition or activity such that the response to an incoming call when the activity has been detected differs from the response when the activity has not been detected. For example, when the activity or condition has been detected, the cellular telephone may be switched off or may be switched to play a special pre-recorded message to incoming calls. Different levels of monitoring may also be provided, e.g. detection of a first level may provide the pre-recorded message, while detection of a second level may switch the telephone off. The remote interrogation may be undertaken by an operator or computer system and the time and result of interrogations may be logged. The described embodiment shows a photodetector 12 detecting the illumination of a display 10 by a lamp 11. In response to the detection of a predetermined condition, such as lamp failure, the cellular telephone apparatus 15 is altered so that it provides an appropriate response to an incoming call. Various conditions may be detected including, among others, motion, gas, temperature, float level, intrusion, theft, stress, pressure and flow. The use of a cellular telephone makes the invention particularly useful for remote locations that may lack power and/or fixed wire communications e.g. a boat.
