[origin: EP1056063A1] The method involves using a Kalman filter based on a model that can take into account the length of the traffic section and measured levels of traffic at the entry to and exit from the section. A transport-oriented model is selected in which a vector i formed contg. a correction value and a traffic level value for each of at least two segments using the length of the traffic sec and the sampled levels of traffic at the entry to and exit from the section. The vector is corrected using the Kalman filter to provide a precise estimate of the exit traffic level and of the traffic state. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for determining the traffic state of a section of traffic.
