[origin: DE19857996A1] The invention relates to a method for economically producing starch esters from carboxylic reaction mixtures, whereby said starch esters contain softeners and can be processed in a thermoplastic manner. The method is characterised in that the main portion of carboxylic acid of heated carboxylic starch ester reaction mixtures is first removed in a predrying step until only a carboxylic acid residue content greater than 1 percent by weight is left over and in a subsequent mechanical processing by means of which an appropriate softener or a softener mixture is homogeneously incorporated into the glassy massive predried carboxylic starch ester to obtain a product which can be processed in a thermoplastic manner and which has no pinholes. The method is also characterised in that the carboxylic acid residue is reduced in a mixing apparatus by appropriate arrangement of one or more vacuum degasifying zones by means of evaporation from the molten material to contents underneath 0.1 percent by weight.
